August 2026Dear Members, Suppliers, Directors, and Team,
The 2026 season is shaping up to deliver mixed results across the Esperance District, with conditions varying considerably between areas.
Across the Mallee, crops are generally in good condition and are looking increasingly likely to deliver a strong end-of-season result. In contrast, much of the coastal Sandplain, both east and west of Esperance, continues to experience varying levels of waterlogging. Some crops had begun to recover from the very wet conditions experienced through June, only to receive further rainfall during the first two weeks of August.
Before recent disruptions in the Middle East, most farm businesses were working towards relatively average budgets for 2026/27. The subsequent sharp increases in fuel and fertiliser prices have added considerable pressure to those expectations and increased input costs at a critical point in the season.
Thankfully, grain prices have also strengthened, supported by unfavourable weather conditions in several overseas production regions. However, yield remains king, and for growers with paddocks currently under water or crops affected by prolonged waterlogging, stronger grain prices may not be enough to offset reduced production this year.
For livestock producers, conditions have finally begun to stabilise following the live export ban, with the market settling into a somewhat more positive position for those remaining in sheep and beef. After a challenging period for the livestock sector, that stability is a welcome development as producers look towards the remainder of the season.
As we head into the final months of the growing season, we wish all EOPP members a successful finish to the season and, when harvest arrives, a safe and productive harvest.

The scholarship is open to young people from across our region who are interested in building a future connected to agriculture, whether they come from a farming family, live in town or are still exploring where the industry could take them.

we are sharing a closer look at the EOPP Scholarship and the many different pathways connected to agriculture.
There’s More to Agriculture Than You Might Think
Agriculture is often associated with farming first, but the industry reaches much further than that. Across regional Western Australia, it also relies on people working in science, business, engineering, technology, environmental management, finance, machinery, food production, education and research.
The EOPP Scholarship is designed to support young people from across our region who are interested in building a future connected to agriculture, whether they come from a farming family, live in town or are only starting to explore where the industry could take them.
The full article outlines a range of study and career pathways, including agricultural science, agribusiness, engineering and technology, sustainability, food science, education, research, economics and finance.
It is a reminder that students do not need to have their whole career mapped out before applying. Exploring the opportunities available is part of discovering where a future in agriculture could lead.
