When people think about a career in agriculture, it is easy to picture farming first.
But agriculture is much bigger than that.
Across regional Western Australia, the industry relies on people working in science, business, engineering, technology, environmental management, finance, machinery, food production and many other areas.
That is why the EOPP Scholarship is not just for students who have grown up on a farm.
It is for young people from across our region who are interested in building a future connected to agriculture, whether they come from a farming family, live in town or are only beginning to discover where the industry could take them.
Agriculture Looks Different for Everyone
One of the strengths of agriculture is the variety of careers and study pathways available.
For some students, the future may be directly involved in farming and production. For others, it could mean working behind the scenes in research, technology, business, finance or sustainability.
Some of the pathways students may consider include:
Agricultural Science
Agricultural science can involve everything from crop production and soil health through to genetics, plant breeding, pest management and sustainable farming practices.
It is a field focused on finding better ways to produce food, manage resources and respond to the challenges facing agriculture.
Agribusiness
Agriculture needs strong businesses behind it.
Agribusiness can lead to careers in marketing, finance, sales, management, supply chains, banking, consulting and entrepreneurship.
For students who enjoy the commercial side of business but want to remain connected to regional industries, agribusiness can open a wide range of opportunities.
Agricultural Engineering and Technology
Technology continues to change the way agriculture operates.
Careers in this area can include machinery, automation, irrigation, infrastructure, precision agriculture, renewable energy and the technology being developed to make agricultural businesses safer and more efficient.
Environment and Sustainability
Caring for land and natural resources is an important part of the future of agriculture.
Environmental careers may involve soil and water management, conservation, biodiversity, sustainable land use and helping agricultural businesses adapt their practices over time.
Food Science and Technology
The agricultural supply chain does not stop when a product leaves the farm.
Food science and technology focuses on areas such as food safety, product development, quality assurance, processing and improving the way food is produced and supplied to consumers.
Education, Research and Industry Support
Agriculture also needs people who can share knowledge.
Teachers, researchers, advisers and industry professionals help farmers and agricultural businesses access new information, develop skills and adopt new practices and technology.
Agricultural Economics and Finance
For students interested in numbers, markets and decision-making, there are also opportunities in agricultural economics, accounting, finance and rural banking.
These roles can support everything from business planning and investment through to risk management, succession and major decisions about the future of agricultural businesses.
You Don’t Have to Know Your Exact Career Yet
Choosing what to study after school can feel like a big decision, and students do not need to have their entire career mapped out before applying.
Part of exploring a future in agriculture is discovering what is available.
Students can look at courses offered through universities, TAFE and agricultural colleges, speak with people already working in the industry and explore the different careers connected to agriculture across the Esperance region and beyond.
You may discover opportunities you did not even know existed.
Supporting the Next Generation
The EOPP Scholarship is about helping local young people take that next step.
By supporting education and training connected to agriculture, EOPP hopes to encourage the next generation of people who will contribute their skills, ideas and knowledge to the industries that remain such an important part of our region.
You do not need to fit a particular mould.
You do not need to come from a farm.
And you do not need to already know exactly where your career will take you.
If you are interested in agriculture and can see yourself contributing to the industry in the future, the EOPP Scholarship could be an opportunity worth exploring.
