Across the region, seeding preparations are well underway, with many already getting machines moving or gearing up to start. After a mixed lead-in to the season, there’s a sense of cautious optimism as everyone looks ahead and hopes for the right conditions to set things up well. As always, this time of year brings plenty of moving parts – long days, planning, and a strong focus on what’s ahead.

It’s also a time where we start to look a little further ahead – not just to the season in front of us, but to the future of our community as well. Scholarship applications for 2026 will be opening on 1 June, and we encourage families, students, and those considering applying to start thinking about what this could mean for them. These opportunities are designed to invest back into our region – supporting growth, education, and future pathways.

And as we move through April, we’re also reminded of the moments that bring us together as a community. With ANZAC Day this Saturday, it’s a timely opportunity to pause and reflect. It’s a day that holds deep meaning across communities like ours – a chance to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have given so much, and to come together in quiet respect. Lest we forget.

You may have come across the Blue Tree Project, a simple but powerful initiative created to raise awareness around mental health. It began with one painted blue tree and has since grown into a wider movement, encouraging conversations and reminding communities to look out for one another

This month, our Supplier Spotlight highlights JLR Mechanical & Auto Electrical, a local business that has grown steadily over time, built on strong relationships, skilled work, and a genuine connection to the Esperance community.

JLR’s journey began as a one-man band, gradually growing as more opportunities came along. What started with maintenance work naturally expanded into equipment hire, allowing the business to support its customers in more ways.

As things progressed, they secured a maintenance contract on a nearby mine site, which then opened the door to offshore work on oil rigs in Bass Strait, Victoria. Over time, the business refined its focus, selling on the mine site contract while continuing with equipment hire and offshore work.

More recently, JLR has taken an exciting step forward, acquiring the Esperance division of Rotech Auto Electrical. This has strengthened their service offering and brought together a skilled local team, including auto electricians and mechanics who are part of the local team.

While the business has grown, the focus has stayed the same – keeping things grounded and people-focused.

JLR is proud to remain a small business, valuing the close-knit feel that comes with it. They’re quick to recognise that the strength of the business comes down to the team behind it.

Without loyal, competent and skilled tradesmen, they say they simply wouldn’t be where they are today.

There’s a strong sense of camaraderie across the team, and it shows in the way they approach their work – practical, reliable, and always willing to help.

At the heart of JLR is something personal. The name itself comes from Jorja, Lylah and Ruby – the owner’s three daughters.

Looking ahead, the goal is to continue building their presence across Esperance and surrounding areas, while maintaining the same steady and professional approach they’re known for.

• Recognition for Outstanding Contribution to Residential Life

• The Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award

These awards reflect not only academic success, but leadership, contribution, and character. Tegan’s parents shared how grateful they are for the opportunity the scholarship provided, explaining that it allowed her to truly find her space and flourish.

This month, our Supplier Spotlight highlights Saintly Steel, a locally owned business supplying steel and fabrication components to the Esperance region.

If you’ve driven along Norseman Road recently, chances are you’ve seen Saintly Steel. It’s a newer name around town, but it comes from people who’ve been part of the local steel and fabrication scene for years.

Saintly Steel opened in August 2025 alongside Wicked Welding & Fabrication. When the Bluescope Esperance branch closed, it left a gap for many local businesses who relied on being able to source steel close to home. Rather than see everything pushed back to Perth, the team decided to step in and help meet that local demand.

It wasn’t about starting something flashy, it was about keeping things practical, local, and reliable.

Getting up and running took time. There were late nights spent setting up the showroom, moving things around, and getting the space right so it reflected the standard they wanted to offer customers.

Having experienced staff join from the start meant locals could walk in knowing they were dealing with people who understood the industry and the kinds of jobs happening around the region.

Saintly Steel supplies a wide range of steel and fabrication components and operates the largest slitter folder machine in the Esperance region, allowing them to manufacture custom flashings in-house, up to 8 metres long and in nearly every colour.

They also offer accurate cutting services and free delivery within the Esperance townsite, helping local builders, fabricators, and trades keep projects moving without unnecessary delays.

Behind Saintly Steel is a small, close-knit team led by Director Monique Gilmore, Manager Callan Rodgers, and Sales lead Crystal Shields.

The culture is straightforward and very Australian – friendly, supportive, and focused on doing a good job. As the team puts it, “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do,” and that shows in the way they work and the relationships they’re building across the community.

Becoming an EOPP Supplier was a natural step. With Wicked Welding & Fabrication already part of EOPP and many customers already using the Cooperative, the fit made sense.

Dear Members, Suppliers, Directors, and Team,

The 2025/26 harvest across the Esperance Port Zone delivered a mixed but generally solid result, with clear differences between crop types.

Canola and barley were the stand-out performers across most parts of the zone. Good establishment and relatively stable finishing conditions supported strong yields, and returns have generally stacked up well.

Wheat, however, told a different story. Two hot days during spring, combined with low rainfall at a critical point, had a noticeable impact on yields. When paired with softer wheat prices, the overall return from wheat has been disappointing compared to barley and canola, particularly given the similar price point between wheat and barley this season.

Despite these challenges, the Esperance Port Zone once again broke its record for total tonnes received. While strong yields contributed to this outcome, a small proportion of the increase reflects additional hectares coming into grain production, particularly where enterprises have transitioned out of sheep into cropping.

Looking ahead to 2026/27, wheat markets remain under pressure. Current price levels are not providing enough margin to comfortably absorb high input costs, including fertiliser, machinery and diesel. This is prompting many growers to reassess wheat exposure relative to other crop options.

Barley and canola continue to look comparatively attractive from a gross margin perspective, assuming normal seasonal conditions. However, legume market options in the zone remain limited, which continues to restrict both rotation flexibility and cropping system options.

As always, seasonal conditions will ultimately shape outcomes, but current price signals and input costs suggest growers will be weighing enterprise mix and risk more carefully as plans are finalised for the coming season.
